Measure/weight was created as a conversion factor for LCL, in order to bridge the difference between volume (measure) and weight. After all, 1 cubic meter of lead will weigh more than 1 cubic meter of feathers. In order to charge each load equally for energy output, a conversion factor was created. Therefore, in oceanfreight, 1 cubic meter is equal to 1000 kilograms. For road transport, 1 cubic meter equals 333 kilograms, (aka measuring 3 times), whereas in airfreight 1 cubic meter equals 167 kilograms. The M/W (or W/M) tariff for oceanfreight is usually also the minimum (1 metric ton or 1 cubic meter).
