In Germany and Austria, Maut (German for toll) must be paid for using the motorway by trucks that exceed 12 tons. This concerns a levy per kilometer and can be paid for in advance or by means of automatic registration. To this end, an Onboard Unit is fitted in the truck that automatically registers the kilometers driven per motorway. Please note that in 2024 the German government is looking to lower the weight limit to only 7.5 tons, as well as increase the charge per kilometer. Technically this is a carbon emission tax, but it will be payable as MAUT.
