A Low Water Surcharge is charged by carriers when the water level of a river is so low, that it affects the loading capacity of a ship. This means that fewer containers can be loaded on board as the draught can't be as deep as usual. Shipping companies compensate for this by introducing a low water surcharge. The surcharge is applied most every year for cargo to and from Canada, along the Saint Laurent river.
