On January 1st 2020, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO 2020) will implement new, stricter rules on sulphur emissions (sulphur cap).
Several carriers have announced that these extra costs to comply with the sulphur cap will be charged to the consumer, and some carriers will implement additional charges as early as 2019.
Low sulphur (0,5 %) is much more expensive than standard fuel (3,5 % sulphur). An alternative to the fuel, is the installation of “scrubbers”, which clean the consumed fuel, but these are costly as well.
These extra costs carriers will face are expected to be in the billions and it appears that most carriers are choosing the clean fuel option.
