2019: Low Water Surcharge Montreal

Canada LWS

Low Water Surcharge

As from January 1st 2019, carriers are implementing a Low Water Surcharge (LWS) for all cargo shipped to or via Montreal.

The port of Montreal is only accessible via this St Lawrence river and due to the current water level of the St Lawrence river, ships have a limited loading capacity, so fewer containers can be loaded on board.
Shipping companies compensate this by introducing a Low Water Surcharge and the amount of the surcharge varies per carrier.
